Garage Door FAQ — Carlsbad & San Diego County

Question 1

How much does it cost to repair a broken garage door spring in San Diego?

Accepted Answer

Most broken spring repairs in North County and the surrounding San Diego area start at $150, depending on the type and size of spring your door uses. Torsion springs (the horizontal bar above the door) are the most common and typically start at $180 for a single spring replacement, including labor. Extension springs (the long springs on either side of the door) are usually less expensive. Keep in mind that heavier doors — such as solid wood doors — require stronger, heavier-duty springs, which can push the cost toward the higher end of that range. We always recommend replacing both springs at the same time — if one has broken, the other is likely near the end of its life too, and replacing them together saves you a second service call and keeps your door balanced. Our technicians carry all common spring sizes on their trucks, so same-day repair is almost always possible.

Question 2

Can I just replace one panel on my garage door instead of the whole door?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in many cases a single damaged panel can be replaced — but it depends on whether a matching panel is still available for your door's make, model, and color. If your door is less than 10–12 years old and from a major manufacturer like Clopay, Wayne Dalton, or Amarr, there's a good chance we can source a matching panel. For older doors or discontinued styles, an exact match may not exist, and a mismatched panel can look worse than the original damage. We'll assess your door and give you an honest recommendation — sometimes a full door replacement is actually more cost-effective when you factor in the age of the door and the cost of sourcing a single panel.

Question 3

Why does my garage door stop halfway and won't close all the way?

Accepted Answer

A garage door that stops halfway and reverses is almost always a safety sensor issue or a limit switch problem. The two small sensors near the bottom of your door tracks send an invisible beam across the opening — if anything breaks that beam (dirt, a spider web, a misaligned sensor), the door thinks something is in the way and stops. Start by wiping the sensor lenses with a dry cloth and making sure both sensors have a solid light (usually green on the receiving side). If the lights are blinking or one is off, the sensors are misaligned and need to be adjusted. If the sensors look fine, the issue may be with the opener's travel limit settings, a worn-out spring causing resistance, or a bent track. Give us a call and we can walk you through a quick diagnosis over the phone.

Question 4

How long does a garage door spring last?

Accepted Answer

Standard torsion springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles — one cycle being the door going up and down once. For a typical household that opens the garage 4–6 times per day, that works out to roughly 4–7 years. High-cycle springs rated for 25,000 or even 100,000 cycles are available and cost more upfront but last significantly longer. If your springs are original to a door that's 7+ years old, it's worth having them inspected even if they haven't broken yet — a spring that snaps under tension can cause serious damage to your vehicle, door, or opener.

Question 5

My garage door opener remote stopped working. Do I need a new opener?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily — a dead remote is usually a simple fix. Start with the obvious: replace the battery (most remotes use a CR2032 coin battery or a 9V). If a new battery doesn't help, try reprogramming the remote to the opener using the 'Learn' button on the motor unit. If neither works, the remote itself may have failed and a replacement remote or universal remote (available for $20–$40) is all you need. A full opener replacement is only warranted if the motor unit itself is malfunctioning, making grinding noises, or is more than 15 years old. We can diagnose the issue on-site and give you an honest answer before recommending any parts.

Question 6

Is it safe to use my garage door if a cable has snapped?

Accepted Answer

No — do not operate a garage door with a broken cable. The cables work in tandem with the springs to carry the full weight of the door. With one cable gone, the door is unbalanced and can come crashing down suddenly, which is a serious safety hazard for anyone underneath it and can cause major damage to your vehicle. Disconnect the opener and leave the door in whatever position it's in until a technician can replace the cable. Cable repairs are typically quick — most are completed within an hour — and are one of the more affordable repairs we do.

Question 7

How much does a new garage door opener cost installed in San Diego?

Accepted Answer

A new garage door opener installed in San Diego typically costs between $300 and $600, depending on the brand, horsepower, and features. A standard chain-drive opener from Chamberlain or LiftMaster runs about $300–$400 installed. Belt-drive openers are quieter and better for attached garages — expect $380–$500 installed. Smart openers with Wi-Fi, battery backup, and camera integration run $450–$600+. We install LiftMaster openers exclusively, which are the professional-grade version of the Chamberlain brand and carry a strong warranty. Battery backup is worth the extra cost in San Diego, where power outages during Santa Ana wind events can leave you stuck.

Question 8

Why is my garage door so loud and how can I fix it?

Accepted Answer

A noisy garage door is almost always caused by lack of lubrication, worn rollers, or loose hardware. The fix is usually inexpensive. Start by applying a garage door-specific lubricant (not WD-40, which is a degreaser) to the springs, hinges, rollers, and the top of the rail. Tighten any loose bolts on the track brackets and hinges. If the rollers are the original nylon or steel rollers and the door is more than 5 years old, replacing them with sealed steel ball-bearing rollers makes a dramatic difference in noise and smoothness. If the door is still loud after lubrication and new rollers, the issue may be with the opener drive system or the door being out of balance.

Question 9

Can I replace my garage door panels myself to save money?

Accepted Answer

Technically yes, but we strongly advise against it for most homeowners. Garage door panels are under significant spring tension, and removing or installing them incorrectly can cause the door to collapse or the springs to release suddenly — both of which can cause serious injury. The process also requires specific tools and knowledge of how the door's weight is distributed. The cost savings are usually modest once you factor in the time, tools, and risk involved. For cosmetic damage like dents or scratches, a professional dent repair or panel replacement is the safer and often more cost-effective route.

Question 10

How long does a garage door repair typically take?

Accepted Answer

Most common repairs — broken springs, snapped cables, roller replacements, sensor adjustments — are completed in 1 to 2 hours. We carry the most common parts on our service trucks, so there's rarely a need to order anything or schedule a second visit. More involved jobs like a full opener replacement or a door that has come completely off its tracks may take 2–3 hours. We'll give you a time estimate before we start and keep you updated if anything unexpected comes up.

Question 11

My car is stuck inside the garage. What should I do right now?

Accepted Answer

Pull the red emergency release cord hanging from the opener rail — this disconnects the door from the opener and lets you lift it manually. Most garage doors, when properly balanced, can be lifted by hand once disconnected. If the door won't budge even manually, a spring has likely broken and the full weight of the door is resting on the tracks. In that case, call us immediately — we offer 24/7 emergency service throughout San Diego County and can typically reach Carlsbad and surrounding areas within 60 minutes. Do not try to force the door open, as this can cause further damage to the tracks or panels.

Question 12

Do you service all garage door brands?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we service and repair all major garage door and opener brands, including Clopay, Wayne Dalton, Amarr, CHI, Raynor, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, and Sears. For openers, we install LiftMaster as our preferred brand due to its reliability and warranty, but we can repair virtually any opener brand currently on the market. The only exception is very old or obscure brands where replacement parts are no longer manufactured — in those cases, we'll let you know upfront and recommend the most cost-effective path forward.
